A WARNING TO CHARITIES and ORGANIZATIONS

We’ve been very supportive over the years. We contribute to and supported many charities, organizations and scholarship funds. But if things continue the way they have, we will be closing the charitable contributions purse strings. Tight.

Why? Try these reasons on and tell me if I’m being unreasonable (I’m not going to name actual organizations here, just to protect…whomever may need to be protected)

YOU’VE SPENT WHAT I CONTRIBUTED ASKING ME TO CONTRIBUTE MORE?

Let’s start out with the $200 contribution to a very well known organization fighting a childhood affliction. I’ve calculated it out modestly and they have now exceeded our contribution soliciting us for another contribution. Paper, printing, postage and manpower, they have spent what we gave them asking us for more.

SHOULDN’T MORE FUNDRAISING DOLLARS GO TO FINDING A CURE?

The schools jump rope marathon for another well known organization that literally posted on the sponsor sheet that only 12% of the fundraising dollars goes to trying to find a cure for the disease, while 50% goes towards, what else, more fundraising.

THE PROPER THING TO DO WOULD SAY “I’M SORRY, CAN I CALL YOU IN THE SUMMER POSSIBLY?”

Hubby is seasonal. We put funds aside for winter (and his projects to keep him sane), but for the most part, by March things get tight, we have successfully financed ourselves into oblivion and now he has to works his ass off all summer paying for it. Charitable contribution company calls last week and hubby says, “I’m sorry, but I haven’t pulled a paycheck in 4 months, now is not a good time”, hard sell charity keeps pushing and pushing and pushing, making it less and less likely they will receive their yearly donation.

WHAT IS YOUR CHARITY? WHOM ARE YOU TRYING TO HELP? WHAT STATE DO YOU OPERATE FROM? CAN YOU TELL ME ANYTHING, ANYTHING AT ALL?

This is one of my favorites. Charity wants to know if we can make a contribution. We ask them about the charity. They can tell us little to nothing. We ask them to send us some information on the charity so we can see if it’s something we’d be interested in supporting. We’re told they don’t have anything like that. We say “sorry, unless you have some information on your charity we are not interested in supporting it.” The reply is, “I’ll see what I can find to send out to you.” 3 days later, what they found, was a bill for a contribution.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CANNOT ACCOUNT FOR OVER 20% OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS YOU RECEIVED WENT?

And what about the Katrina relief funds? Did you know one of the major charities cannot account for where a large sum of the contributions they received went? Did you know that a majority of what was contributed, by us Americans, did not go to the victims but instead went to special interest groups, and the money raised by musicians and artists to help the victims of the hurricane, did not see the light of day in the areas hit by that bitch Katrina?

A warning for all you charities out there, your funding is about to be cut out of the budget. At least out of the Hartigan budget.

Two great charities:

1. Mary's Place/Sharing and Caring hands. More than 95% of the money given actually goes to feeding, clothing, housing the poor.

2. Food shelf. Buy extra groceries every month and bring a bag to the food shelf. There is no question where your money is going.

I'm constantly getting hounded by our local fire and police departments and I've always given $20 bucks to each about 4'x a year. I've always assumed the person calling was a fireman or police man. I just found out its a paid solicitor. I'm done. I think the police and fire are wonderful, but these shouldn't be charities. Does that sound bad. I hope not, but these calls are too often for me.

I would also note that the Penn State Alumnit Association calls me no less than 8 times a year asking for money. Donation money. Despite the fact that my student loans have not been paid off yet. This doesn't even make sense to me. At least wait until I'm done paying your for my education before you start hawking me for extra dough.

I might also suggest, perhaps predictably, Penn State's Dance Marathon. I was active with them when I was in college and it's a wonderful fundraising effort to benefit pediatric cancer research. And all the money goes to help the charity (the Four Diamonds Fund) -- all fundraising materials and manpower are donated.

Scott, the food shelf is a very good suggestion.

Jewels, we get at least 1 phone call a week from both, it is getting old.

Popo, I have contributed to THON.
