Thursday, March 16, 2006 ENTITLEMENT 101 For anyone who’s counting (approx. 53 days for most, excluding weekends, holidays and teachers workshops), we are coming near the end of yet another school year.A few words of advice for the upcoming graduates about to enter the job world: A) Having a college degree does not entitle you to a job. B) If you’re lucky enough to be offered a job, it doesn’t mean you are entitled to a management position. Nor does it entitle you to a large salary. “Entry-level”. Get used to those 2 words. C) A college degree does not entitle you to respect. Does anyone see a theme here? It seems Entitlement 101 is the class of the decade. Students today leave school with the attitude of “I am entitled to a great job, a handsome salary and a title that commands respect.” Worst of all, they seem to be adding “without having to actually work.” onto the end. If you’ve landed a job, and display this type of attitude, don’t be surprised, if after a few months your co-workers seem to want to knock you down a peg or two… or just simply shove you right off that pedestal. ![]() One more thing, just because you took a “class” in Photoshop or Illustrator does not entitle you to your claim of having a “Design background”. posted by me | 1:48 PM | 8 comments Comments: Post a Comment So when are you going to start teaching this Entitlement 101 class? Because I think you are right, these people need some learnin'. # posted by dan : 3/16/2006 10:38 PMSo, I am thinking there is some relatively new employee where my big sis works that has this feeling of entitlement. Oh, you have no idea how much I want to just push the new girl down. I mean seriously want to take her out. Wouldn't take much, she can't weigh but a buck. Just take the chic out-sounds like she totally deserves it. You'd be the hero of your office. The advertising/design/PR field has to be the worst for this, too. I remember my last design job -- this 22-year-old piece of crap rolls in and tries to run the entire place in a matter of seconds (he actually asked if he could switch cubes with me since mine was closer to the window and he preferred that). It killed me. Lynne-Nobody appreciates the artists or the history. It's so sad. Wanna help me push her down? I'm a little late here, but let me add this. Any freaking monkey can learn the programs. You've got to have it in you to truly design. Ideas and edge are not learned from mastering photoshop and Illustrator. Back to Blog |
