Exposed Aggregate is exposing rocks mixed into the concrete to create a textured surface.

Once the concrete has been poured and finished, just like in other applications, a retarder is applied to the surface. The rest of the concrete hardens and sets, but the surface curing takes much longer. After a couple hours, the surface is gently sprayed off exposing the rocks. Once cured, the surface can be sealed.

Rocks used in this process can be small (pea sized) or large (6") and from various families of aggregate. Exposed river rock with the round smooth stones about the size of a nickel is probably the most common type of exposed aggregate you will come across, but certainly not the only option.

Exposed Aggregate can be used anywhere gray concrete is used. Patios, driveways, steps, walks, even basement floors or even as a decorative border.
